The Aberdeen Assassin will defend his Commonwealth lightweight title in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Sports Centre on January 29 against Ghanaian Samuel Amoako, and he admits the bout is the first of a sustained effort to increase his profile and, he hopes, his bank balance.
Both his monetary value and his profile will receive a significant boost after the news Sky Sports will show his defence live at the end of the month.
McAllister said: “I hope 2010 will be a big year.
“I want to be undefeated through the year and, hopefully, take some titles back to Aberdeen.
“I am going to have to step it up if I want the big chances to come my way but I believe I am up to the task.
“Fighting in Glasgow is the first step as it will take me out of my comfort zone of Aberdeen.
“It is a deliberate ploy to take this fight to Glasgow as I know money is tight for everyone in January, myself included.
“The undercard will feature fighters from Glasgow as well and I am sure these young lads will all be doing their bit to promote their fights without me having to carry the burden on my own.”
Amoako will be a step into the unknown for McAllister, but the 27-year-old was in typical bullish mood when asked about the threat of the challenger.
He said: “I don’t know anything about Amoako other than his record is 17 wins and one loss with seven knockouts.
“He is a decent campaigner and he cannot be a dud if the Commonwealth council have put him forward to fight for my title.
“He is the number one contender and I am going out there to knock him out.
“I won’t take him lightly but I know what I can do and I aim to show Glasgow what the Aberdeen Assassin is all about.”
McAllister’s preparations for the bout have been hampered by the winter weather, with the snow leaving him unable to train on the roads in the city as he normally does.
However, he has found solace in the Aberdeen Sports Village recently and has been grateful for the use of the indoor facilities.
He said: “At this time of year it is a hard task for anybody to be pounding the streets, but the freakish weather has made it even harder for me.
“I felt I wasn’t keeping myself motivated when I looked at the prospect of running in three foot of snow, but thanks to the Sports Village I have been able to use the sprint track.
“It’s important when you get close to a fight you exercise your lungs as much as any other part of your body and once the snow melts I will get back out for some 10-mile runs to build up my stamina before my fight.”
