Derric Rossy Vs Alexis Mejias Live StreamingToday night, January 27th at the M2 Lounge on New York City’s west side of Manhattan Winky Promotions, Winky Wright’s company, will feature Derric Rossy, 22-2 (12 KOs), facing a tough guy in Alexis Mejias, 10-2 (4 KOs), in the eight round heavyweight main event. Also on the show will be popular former Olympian, Jerson Ravelo in a Super-middleweight six.
Rossy is the latest ex-football player to enter boxing and he is no doubt the most successful since Charley Powell left the 49ers and the Raiders to enter the heavyweight rankings back in 1959. He KO’d the highly ranked Cuban heavyweight, Nino Valdes. Before old Charley there was Steve Hamas; a fullback at Penn State. He faced the best of his day back in the 1930s. He split four with Tommy Loughran, held wins over Art Lasky, and Lee Ramage, and split two with Max Schmeling.
In recent years football players have not fared well at all. Mark Gastineau tried and failed and so did “Too Tall” Jones.
But now we have a former Boston College player who appears to have made the transition.
“Football is dead and gone,” said the 29 year old Derric Rossy of his complete tranformation. “It was great, but I have much more love for boxing.”
He has worked with some pretty good people and faced a few tough guys along the way. He holds wins over former WBO champ Ray Mercer, spoiler Zack Page, unbeaten William Shahan, tough Carl Davis Drumond, and rugged Edward Gutierrez. He is currently on a four bout winning streak. He showed tremendous courage and heart while losing for the first time to the experienced and slick boxing Eddie Chambers. After he lost to the undefeated (at the time) Russian, Alexander Dimitrenko, Rossy left the ring determined to make meaningful changes in his skills set.
“I’ve made huge adjustments,” said Rossy. “I revamped my style; I was very in your face, now it’s more of a mixture. The biggest thing was experience. That was the biggest thing that I was lacking. I think I got it now. I have a lot of confidence in myself. You’ll see a different fighter on Wednesday night.”
Rossy, who is promoted by Sal Musumeci and his Final Forum promotions, is now training in Florida with a new trainer. Josh Aguilera.
“Sal is trying to put me in a position where I will be able to get the right fights.”
Rossy and his trainer, Aguilera, are not as interested in his opponent’s style as they are in honing Rossy’s skills.
“I’m just working on me,” said Rossy. “Don’t get me wrong, we try to get as many advantages as we can by studying opponents but there really isn’t tons of film on him. Basically it’s what I do anyway, and feel and make my adjustments in the ring. I know that he will be a willing opponent and those are the most dangerous.”
Rossy knows that he will be the step up in this one. His opponent is the one with the big opportunity to pick up the big win.
“I’ve been on a good run right now,” said the Boston College graduate. “I’m training hard. I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been. I trimmed down a lot. I’m 232 right now (down from a high of 252). Great weight; feeling strong, feeling fast, my hand speed is great and I’m boxing. When I box a guy and he wants to go, he’ll let me know and that’s when I take him out.”
Having participated in two of the more rugged sports, boxing and football, which does he consider to be the more difficult?
“Oh, boxing by far,” he said without hesitation. “Football has its own difficulties in it as far as strength. It’s like getting into car accidents every day, but being in boxing is like running a marathon with sprints in between with somebody throwing punches at you.”
He said that 2010 will be his breakout year.
